“To Pimp a Butterfly” the hip-hop musical was based on the Pulitzer Prize and Grammy award-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar's groundbreaking album “To Pimp a Butterfly.”
Our story investigated the early career of a young black rapper finding acclaim in a flawed entertainment system, and the tensions that arise when the young creative attempts to regain their autonomy in a record industry that seeks solely to “pimp out” their talent. We explored the beauty and joy that resides in our communities, along with the harsh realities of the systemic institutions that hamper us.
